  2. Today, I ran through all of the Massachusetts Coburns currently listed in the MA Vital records via surnames, which I do believe excludes those still classified under a "Negro" status, but it was a start for free and/or passing-white Coburns. Also excludes these towns which had broken links: Malden, Medford, Natick, Stow, Waltham, Wilmington

Of note, these are additional spellings duplicating Coburn in MA around this time:
Coleborne, Colburn, Colbern, Cobourn, Cobun, Colbon, Colbourn, Coburne

Also of note, Dracut MA is FULL of Coburns. Many other towns note their Coburns as being from Dracut. Double-checked the Negro vital records for Dracut and no additional Coburn / Georges listed there.

    Possible matches?

    * George Colburn of Boston and Sarah H. Foster filed their intent to marry in 1842 in Cambridge MA - might be able to find additional information through Sarah to confirm or deny identification with Private Coburn.
    * George A. Edwards is mentioned in a record pertaining to an Etta T. Coburn, listed as his wife, b. 1845 in Dracut, MA but I'm not 100% if Coburn was her married or maiden name
    * George F. Colburn, age 28, declared intention to marry to Sarah Mead in 1844, Lowell MA => birth year of 1816 (I've seen roster-calculated MA 54th birth years off by 5-6 years)

Other George Coburn details to distinguish them from Private Coburn (a few long shot maybes scattered in):

    * George Phinehas Coburn, b. 1848, son of Phinehas (too young, wrong middle initial)
    * George William Coburn, b. 1829, son of Stephen & Lucy (too young, wrong middle initial)
    * George Fitz James Coburn, b. 1821, son of Augustus George Pliney & Mary Ann (this is close enough that it's not 100% ruled out from the recordkeeping of the time; E. could be an F.; 1821 could be 1822.)
    * Sarah and George Bennett Coburn filed their intent to marry in 1840 in Burlington MA
    * George Albert Coburn, b. 1845, son of Calvin and Mary C., Cambridge MA
    * George W. Colburn, b. 1814, Cambridge MA

    * George F., b. 1843, son of shoemaker Frederick & Hepsibeth, Lowell MA

    1. RE: Sarah H. Foster Colburn of Cambridge MA

There is a Sarah Hale Foster b. 1831. No parental info.

  3. This appears to the initial Coburn settler responsible for all the following Coburns:

    Edward Colburn
Emigrated: July 1635 on the ship Defence

From what I've been reading, Native Americans pushed back against the settlement in Dracut. No peace between the early Colburns and the tribes in the area. :(
