Private James Washington Green of Company D, Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry

Private James Washington Green (28 September 1847 - 30 April 1864)


He was born on 28 September 1847 in Sherborn, MA, the son of James Green (1805 - 1875) and Maria Green née Cobb (1811 - 1897) and grandson of Thomas Green and Lois Green née Freeman. His brother, Amos Green, was also in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts.

Enlisted from Sheeban, PA on 17 December 1863. He was entered into the roster as 21 years old (which would imply an 1842 birth year), single and working as a seaman.

Died 30 April 1864 at the General Hospital in Beaufort, SC of diahrrea.

His grave is at National Beaufort Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.

Private Alexander F. Green of Company D, Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry

Private Alexander F. Green (1822 - 19 March 1864)


Enlisted from Philadelphia, PA on 11 December 1863. He was 41 years old, single and working as a barber.

Died 19 March 1864 in the General Hospital at Beaufort, SC due to diarrhea.

His grave is at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.

Private Martin Gilman (1840 - 27 July 1863)


Enlisted from Chambersburg, PA on 29 April 1863. He was 23 years old, married and working as a farmer.

Wounded 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner.

Died of his wounds on 27 July 1863 at the General Hospital at Beaufort, SC.

His grave is at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
