Private Cato Chaney of Company D, Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry

Private Cato Chaney (1829 - 1886)



Enlisted from Mercer County, OH on 12 May 1863. He was 34 years old, single and working as a farmer.

Wounded 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner.

Discharged 13 May 1864 from Davids Island, NY.

His grave is at Beech Grove Cemetery in Muncie, IN.

Private William Cebolt of Company D, Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry

Private William Cebolt (12 February 1835 - 10 April 1918)



Born 12 February 1825 in Jackson, TN to father Henry Cebolt and mother Mary (Reeves) Perkins.

Married Martha (Davis), daughter of Mary (Jones) and Allen Davis, in 1857.

Enlisted from New Bedford, MA on 9 October 1863. He was 27 years old, single and working as a farmer.

Discharged 29 May 1865 from St. Andrews Parish, SC.

Private Cebolt and Martha (Davis) had five children, first living in Indiana but relocating to Battle Creek, MI: Christiana (b. 1858 Indiana), Mary Elizabeth (b. 1861 Indiana), William Jr. (1866 Michigan), John H. (b. 1869 Michigan) and Richard Otto (b. 1869 Michigan.)

During his life, he was also married to Sarah (Tusing) (m. 16 March 1885 in Clark, IL) and Martha (Harvey) (m. 23 February 1907 in Indiana.) Private Cebolt and Martha (Davis) divorced and both remarried (Private Cebolt to Sarah (Tusing)) but eventually remarried each other in 18 June 1905.

His grave is at Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo, IN.

Wounded and imprisoned on 20 February 1864 at Olustee, FL.

Discharged 16 July 1865 from Beaufort, SC.
